Barcelona is a popular tourist destination with millions of visitors each year. There are accommodations for every price range from hostels to five-star hotels. Peak travel season is between the months of April to October. If you are looking to avoid crowds and/or save money head to Barcelona during their off season. I visited during the off season and that was how I was able to save on my airfare, Airbnb, and excursions.
There are also many activities for every type of traveler in Barcelona. If you are interested in art or architecture there are several museums to choose from and landmarks designed by Antoni Gaudí that you can visit. If you are more of a foodie, you will find that Barcelona is a unique culinary experience. You can take a cooking class to learn how to make paella, visit La Boqueria market, or eat like a local and enjoy tapas and pinchos for dinner. If your visit is in the summertime, you can spend a day or two on the beach. If Barcelona’s nightlife is what you seek, bars and clubs of all kinds are open till the early morning.
Despite being on my own and not having the best sense of direction I found myself navigating through Barcelona comfortably. When I walked, I was able to read and follow my offline Google Maps. When I used the metro, I was able to make sure I was on the right train heading in the right direction due to the many helpful signs throughout each station. The bus stops were also clearly marked and displayed the bus direction and upcoming stops. I suggest purchasing the Hola Barcelona Card. It will give you unlimited rides any time of day on the bus, tram, and metro (including to and from the airport) for a period of 2, 3, 4, or 5 days.
I was very worried about traveling alone in Barcelona. Many places mentioned that pickpocketing was a big issue for travelers. Luckily, it was winter, so I was wearing a coat and kept my hands in my pockets. It wasn’t very crowded, so no one ever bumped into me. I never felt unsafe walking around Barcelona. It was interesting to realize that in order to find many hidden gems I had to walk down narrow alleyways and that it was safe to do so. The locals appear to be used to tourists and didn’t really seem to notice me. However, whenever I entered a restaurant or store, they always greeted me in a welcoming manner.
Live Music
A little peak of the band that was performing the night I went out.
Day 1
The highlight of my first day was walking down Las Ramblas. A well-known street that runs through the heart of Barcelona. Many shops and restaurants to explore.
Plaça de Catalunya and La Boqueria market are nearby and worth a visit.
I also walked around the Gothic Quarter neighborhood just to get a sense of the city.
Day 2
In the morning I spent my time visiting La Sagrada Família, Gaudí’s most famous landmark. It is the only church that I know of where you must buy tickets to enter. Be careful, tickets will sell out!
I booked an Airbnb nightlife experience, so I didn’t have to worry about going out at night solo. Food, drinks, and dancing with fellow travelers into the early hours of the morning!
Day 3
I watched the sun rise over Barcelona while visiting and exploring Park Güell. There are several areas of the park to explore, and each one is designed differently.
That afternoon I took part in a history walking tour and a photoshoot to celebrate my birthday and my first solo trip!
A day at the beach in Newport, Rhode Island
My plans for Rhode Island were to stop at the Cliff Walk in Newport and taste the well-known frozen lemonade from Del’s Lemonade. It would be a short day trip before we continued to our next destination - an easy, quick, and tasty way to visit my 22nd state. The Cliff...
Finding Black History in Portsmouth, New Hampshire
I’m not familiar with New Hampshire and have not heard many people speak about it - unlike other states in the Northeast. For that reason, I made the city of Portsmouth a pit stop on our trip. The plan was to eat a quick breakfast, walk downtown a little bit and then...
Eating my way through Portland, Maine
At the top of my travel wish list was exploring Maine during the summer, and it feels so good to say that I scratched it off my list! Visiting Maine was also visiting my 20th state in the US, and I could not help but smile at the drive into Portland during sunset....
